Virus

A virus is a piece of computer code often used maliciously to steal or destroy information to the advantage of an attacker, often referred to as a hacker or cracker. Viruses can be sent in the form of seemingly innocent-looking file attachments via instant messaging, web portals, and email, as is the case in many phishing scams. The goal of every virus varies, though many are either targeted towards a specific platform, such as the Windows operating system, or application, like popular social networking websites. Virus scanners are used to help thwart the risk of being infected with a previously detected computer virus.
