So called due to the nature of luring unknowing victims to a fraudulent website, or "hook", phishing scams are a form of malicious computer attack used by crackers
to generate income. The most popular type of this attack is the Nigerian email scam, where a victim can be lured to send money under false pretenses that he or she may receive in return much more money than their original investment. Phishing scams also come in the form of legitimate-looking websites, that are often clones of the real thing, such as a banking site, where they harvest usernames and passwords. Those access credentials are then used to log in to the actual bank's website to drain funds from victims' accounts.
